Tommy Emmanuel on PBS

Postby Ray Bohlken » Wed May 11, 2011 9:53 am

Our local cable outlet has the UNC PBS station. Over the weekend, they broadcast a show called Sierra Center Stage with Tommy Emmanuel. It was a great show. I don't know if other areas get this show or not, but here is a link to the people who are scheduled to perform. I meant to give a heads-up BEFORE the show, but my intentions are often overcome by a deficient memory. I hope you all get to see the Tommy Emmanuel performance. It was excellent.

I read that Tommy was influenced by listening to a recording of Arthur Smith's "Guitar Boogie". Tommy has added more energy and his own licks yet retained some of the original flavor of the song. An elderly Arthur Smith performs his signature song playing his red Gibson ES-355 with his Crackerjack band providing a good solid rhythm. The video is from April 1995.

Here is Arthur Smith's acoustic version of his "Guitar Boogie" with his Martin guitar (D-18?) on TNN's Fire On the Mountain. The quilt backdrop was produced by my wife Jean, supervising local quilters, and known as the 'world's largest quilt' displayed at the World's Fair in Knoxville.

You can see and hear Arthur Smith's influence on Tommy's version of the song.

Ronnie,
I always enjoyed Arthur Smith's Guitar Boogie. It was one of the first songs I tried to learn. I didn't do the up and down picking for a long time, though. Tommy played his version of the song on Sierra Center Stage and it was amazing as always. He also played his version of Classical Gas with the Walk, Don't Run section in the middle, Mombasa, and the Initiation, among others. There were some interviews and the host of the show played a jam with him on harmonica. Thanks for posting these two videos. I enjoyed them.
