SteepleChase Lane by Keener

Postby keener » Fri Jan 28, 2011 4:08 pm

After hearing this tune for years without trying to learn it, I learned it last night by watching a YouTube of Chet playing it on the Jimmy Dean show. Courtesy of John McClellan, the tuning is:
Low to high:

e-flat, a-flat, e-flat, f, c, e-flat (a-flat 6 tuning)

Chet capoed at the second fret (b-flat 6)

And, here's Chet playing on the Jimmy Dean show many moons ago:

Bruce,

Way to go...by golly you got it! It sounded great and you did good. That was one of Merle Travis' favorite Chet tunes. You can be proud of your accomplishment, and thanks for the chords so I can try it myself.

Roger, Neil, Ronnie, Tom: thank you very much, guys. I really enjoyed playing that one. For years I had it in my head that it was probably just a G-tuning, and that I'd get around to learning it one day. Then, last year, when John McClellan posted the tuning, I saved his wording to my hard drive, knowing that I'd want to tinker with it one day. Then, last night when I saw Chet play it, I said to myself "it's time to learn this." Chet's video is great in that you can see everything he is doing, so it wasn't hard to learn.

Thanks again

Bruce, I don't weigh in very often, I am more of a watcher on this board. BUT decided to make an exception here, to tell you I think this is just great! (I watch and enjoy all the videos you post). The comment was made above that you play musically. That's right on. Thanks, Chuck

Great Job Bruce.. I sure wish I could learn things that fast. Didn't Jerry write that and name it after the street he lived on, or was that just one of his stories!!

Chuck, Phil, and Ron: you guys sure make me feel good. Thank you.

Ron, yes, Jerry wrote SteepleChase Lane, and named it after the street he lived on.

This "Jerry tuning" is kinda neat to mess around with. I've been working on another tune in it this evening, and will probably record it tomorrow, if I can get the kinks out. It's amazing how an alternate tuning can open up your creativity.

Anyway, SteepleChase Lane is a tune I'm glad I finally decided to learn. It's been a favorite of mine for many years.

All my best
Bruce
