How Chet Atkins Helped Popularize Classical Repertoire

Postby the-ocean87 » Wed Jan 10, 2018 3:26 pm

Hi. Just found this nice article about Chet on "classicalguitarmagazine" from last December. It is a well written article which gives Chet the respect he deserves.
Hope you like it.

Excellent! Most excellent! As has been said before, Chet could play everything from Bach to rock, with every stop in between!

And he was SPLENDID on his classical renditions!!

Nothing Mr Guitar couldn't really play, when he set his mind to it.

Now Chet could play the arrangements that classical guitarists favor, but my million dollar question is this: how many of them can play Chet's arrangements?? I suspect not a whole lot of them.

Shows who the TRUE master was, imho.

(And all this coming from a guy who loves classical and works on classical studies all the time.)

Unfortunately, it is only people like some of us who aren't specialists in classical music who feel that Chet was successful in this area and could add it to his repertoire of "mastery". Numerous friends of mine who are classical guitarists have criticized him for his form, technique, and "lack of feeling".When I've tried to defend him, I don't have the required credibility and simply to say "Well he sounds good to me!" isn't effective........lol.

That's what truly pisses me about classical players! As in your example, they even had the moxy to criticize Mr Guitar because his "technique" didn't meet their snobby standards!

Well screw 'em all! Who died and made them Don Corlione? Segovia, perhaps?

It just REALLY burns me!!

Now don't get me wrong, I love classical guitar music, and if my left arm heals, I will be back into learning more etudes.

But in the meantime, as Flo said to Mel, they can all kiss my grits!

And oh, btw, there is not a single classical guitar player out there who is worthy to tie Chet's shoelaces. Or polish his guitar.

Orgulous hacks!!

Doug, it's difficult not to be extremely defensive on Chet's behalf, I know. I just try to look at things through they eyes of others and regardless of how passionate I am, they view things differently and there's nothing I can say to change anything. I just bite my tongue.

I do that a lot. (Bite my tongue, that is).

But when they are dissing Chet, they're walkin' on the fightin side of me.
