David's Dance

Postby Doug Working » Mon Oct 23, 2017 5:28 pm

Has anyone ever transcribed and or tabbed David's Dance from "Me and My Guitar"? I have tried to figure it out by ear, but I'm batting zero. I know it's in a minor key, but I can't quite figure it out. I REALLY want this arrangement. Actually, there are a BUNCH of Chet arrangements I want, and believe me, I have a plethora of Chet transcription books, but there are certain gems that I love and consider gold, yet those who specialize in transcribing and publishing books just seem to skip over!

HI Doug. Here is a link to David's Dance. One of the Dan Bishop TABS is a .PDF file of the song. Yhe other is a ZIP file of a TEF file....TaBledit file. It says it is Chet's arrangement. I hope this helps.
Take care,
Ray

Doug,
Marcel Dadi tabbed David's Dance in his book "Picks with Chet Atkins". My copy dates from the 1970's so I'm not sure if it is still in print, but Ebay might be a source.

I should have added that there are a bunch of Chet arrangements that would like. One of them being "Imagination" from Chet's first version of Stringin' Along with Chet. It was never released on the 12 inch version of the record. I always thought it was a gem. I've worked most of it out but there are a few niggly little phrases that I just don't compute.

A few years ago when it was part of my repertoire I played "David's Dance" in drop-D. Maybe you've been using that?

Thanks for reminding of this beautiful tune. I hadn't heard of thought of it in many years. Who knows, I might even try to learn it! :D

One other thing that actually bothers me is that I had never heard of Odell Martin until I first listened to Chet Atkins version and saw that Martin had composed it. So I listened to some of his stuff and man was he talented. I don't know how his name and music eluded me all these years since the mid sixties.

Paul Yandell talks about his friendship with Odell in his book. I bought Chet's "Me and My Guitar" vinyl record in 1977 when it first came out. I saw Odell's name in parentheses for "David's Dance". It's a beautiful song.

I had a CD of Odell's playing, and he definitely had some chops. I kick myself because the CD got lost, and I miss it, because I loved the CD. Wish I had it back.
