I did a quick check of the FAQ's for Paul, and I didn't see the settings for Snowbird in there. I remember he did post it one time, but of course I don't remember what they were. Those settings were for the Lexicon PCM42 and the tempo would have to be the same to make it work right. It doesn't take too long, as Norm mentioned, to experiment with whatever delay unit you have to get it though. I have owned some of the Lexicon units, although I have never been fortunate enough to own a PCM42. The Lexicon reverb and delay is second to none in quality, imho.

Thanks Richard for checking - I remember Paul posting the settings too. I should have printed it out then.

I checked my manuscript to see if I had snagged anything Paul had said about echo and "Snowbird" and it was limited.

"....When I use that kind of effect I set the time where it repeats like an eight note (one
AND) with the AND being the repeat. In later years on tunes like “Sails” Chet
would use four or five repeats up around 800ms if I remember correctly. He would
have the volume of the repeat very soft. For “Snowbird” he used a tape machine for
the echo, not an EchoPlex or any kind of delay..."

He's describing the setting pretty much like my posted example has it.

That should do it.

He did it the way I said, first you have to know the tempo of the tune (how fast it is) there are web sites on the web that has all that figured out it tell you what to set the delay for a certain tempo then turn up about 4 repeats, and drive your self nuts trying to play what Chet did, thanks paul

Back when I was trying to analyze things like echo settings I had a turntable that had 16rpm on it. When you slow down Chet's playbacks you could clearly hear exactly how many repeat notes he had his current rig set for.

This kind of thing is still doable if you just look around on the internet for a program that will do this to audio or even YouTube tracks

Despite what RPVogh 3 posted about Paul saying ‘turn the repeats up to 4” this live video seems to clearly show Chet using a single strong repeated (echoed) note as already described.

Reading Paul’s response to Eddie (in that posting) I detect a note of irritation on Paul’s part: “He did it the way I said” meaning he felt he had already answered the question. He often expressed a little shortness over constantly repeated (and answered) questions.

Another “favorite” was repeatedly being asked about dealing with the opening passage of “Cascade”

I used to do that too Norm, haven't done it in a long time though. I used to spend a lot of time with it trying to figure out how Chet Atkins did stuff. I will always be amazed at what he could do! Al
