National Thumbpickers Hall of Fame

Postby RonHaft » Sat Mar 21, 2015 8:01 pm

It’s not too early to start planning for the big Home of the Legends thumbpicking weekend in Powderly KY, especially for folks who would like to participate in the International Home of the Legends Thumbpicking Contest. In addition to the competition the weekend includes the annual National Thumbpickers Hall of Fame induction ceremony, concerts, jam sessions, open mic, and door prizes. Visiting with great friends, pickers and fans is also nice!
The event will be held around the last weekend of September depending on scheduling requirements of performers. This year’s dates will be posted soon at http://www.ntphf.com/index.html. Contest rules are also available there. Prizes include cash and guitars. Activities are in and around the Merle Travis Music Center http://www.merletravismusiccenter.com in the heart of Muhlenburg county KY, the home of thumbpicking. We are especially interested in attracting young pickers for the junior category.
Time to start practicing for the big event! Looking forward to visiting with old friends and meeting new ones. Hope to see you there.

Ooops, my email has changed. It's ronhaft408@yahoo.com. I'll fix that soon.

You are right Ron. We always have a great "Home of the Legends" weekend of thumbpicking for the Hall of Fame Inductions and Contest. And this year they are planning on having an all star lineup for the main concert. Can't say yet who they are but if all works out, it will be memorable.
Its give folks another reason to finally visit Muhlenberg County where Travis was raised and see a bit of thumbpicking history. Go to our site at http://www.thumbpickers/join1.htm for a map of the musical points of interest around Muhlenberg County as well as info on Hotels in the area.
As most of you know, Merle Travis credits a fellow named Mose Rager for his inspiration and education on thumbpicking. The Mose Rager Birthday celebration is coming up on April 11th in Drakesboro, KY., a town where the streets are named after the historical thumbpickers they call "The Legends". It was those pickers who developed the style and lead to Merle Travis then on to Chet Atkins .... Jerry Reed .... Tommy Emmanuel .... Richard Smith ........ and so on. For more information on Mose's birthday picking party, go to our site at http://www.thumbpicker.org/news. Come join in the picking or just come by and listen and visit Muhlenberg County. It's a beautiful time of year for a trip.
