Question regarding MAMG

Postby EdNilo » Wed Mar 04, 2015 4:35 pm

I was reading my copy of MAMG, the hard cover book, and noticed that Chet's signature was stamped but the "CGP" seemed to be hand written. Could that be the case?

Thanks

Sadly, Chet was too ill to do any signing of those pages at all. I believe a close friend of his did the honors with a special made stamp.

Seems like I read somewhere it was his boyhood friend Buster Devault who stamped those pages for him

If I remember correctly I believe the name was Ted Walters who stamped the books with Chet's signature.

I think that is correct, Norm, I seem to recall that also.

I met Mr. Devault once at the convention. Nice old guy...

A little bird just sent me an email:

"...Harry Warner stamped the books. It says so opposite the signature on the credit page. He was a friend of Chet's..."

That would seem to put the finis to that question.

My hardcover is buried in its original shipping box and is not easy for me to get at. I still can't get Buster Devault out of my mind. If anyone knows Russ Chochran well they could ask him...

Correction: In issue 52, June 2001 of Mister Guitar there is an article about the MAMG book. The article says Ted Walters assisted with cataloging Chet's guitars ( I knew I remembered that name), but it was Harry Warner who stamped Chet's signature in the books.

I dug mine up and, sure enough, like the "little bird" told me the story was there...

The hardcover books have a stamped “Chet Atkins cgp right over the “This is copy #_____ spot.

The facing page says the following:

The original plan was for Chet Atkins to personally sign each copy on the gold stamped facing page. However, as time went on, it seemed like signing this many copies might be too tiring and time consuming, so, with Chet’s approval, the decision was made that each copy would instead be stamped with his official signature stamp. The stamping was done in Nashville by Chet’s friend Harry Warner.

The next few lines indicate that some of the material in the numbered editions will not appear in any “popular-priced” editions.

Such certainly seems to be the case…
