Gospel guitarist here on the Chetboard
I want to hear from everyone here on the Chetboard that considers themselves Primarily a Gospel Guitarist. Don't be shy, just post here that you mainly play gospel. I'm sure there are others out there like myself that pick at church all the time, if so I would like to hear from you.
Thanks,

I have been playing all of my "gigs" at church. Also when I practice, it has been a lot of gospel tunes lately. The melodies in most gospel tunes are so incredibly beautiful. Often times I don't always understand the lyrics of some of the old hymns, but the melodies can be in my head for days. It's wonderful...

Me too. These days, I play mostly at home for personal enjoyment and sometimes at church, just once in a while in other settings. Playing a few novelty tunes and some old standards is fun too, but by far, most of what I play consists of well known hymns and Christian songs.

Aw, go ahead and sign me up too! I play at church on Sundays. Every once in awhile I'll get to jam with some other pickers. One Sunday I played a tune for the offering and I played "I Surrender All" !!!! Caused quite a stir!!!! But I do like all of the Chet tunes and practice them regularly and always trying to learn more. The way I see it, it's kind'a like money. There probably ain't nuthin' more worldly than money. But, it does have it's place in church and doing the Lord's work. Over and out! Steve

Good to hear that so many here primarily play gospel music. To me it makes guitar playing a sort of "calling" or "higher purpose". Sure it's fun playing guitar for ourselves, friends and family, but playing gospel music has a purpose. I think it helps people and it can be a great help to your local church. I know many churches now have hired musicians, but there are still some out there that people volunteer their talent. It's a blessing to the church. Playing at church, by ear (like we all do at our church) helps you to become a better player, I believe. Where I go, we usually have, piano, drums, bass, keyboard, banjo, mandolin and a couple of guitarist. We generally play every song that's sang during the services. Sometimes we play a few instrumentals before church starts. Two or three congregational numbers, one or two special singers and a few altar songs at the closing of the service. This gives you quite a bit of practice each service. It also helps a person develop timing by playing with a band. At our church, we all volunteer our talents and enjoy playing for the Lord and the church congregation!
Thanks,
