Hi Doug,

On most songs they both play lead but mostly Chet played the lead first, except on 1st track Batucada (Lenny first plays a melody). On 2nd track Tenderly, only Chet plays the lead. On the last 9th track Polka Dots And Moonbeams, Chet plays the whole song alone in his style and then Lenny plays alone the whole song in his own style. Only at the end they play the melody once more together. This album is a masterpiece, just two guitars and two the best guitarists ever!

I think I remember reading somewhere that Chet said that when Lenny got going he just let him get on with it. What he conjured up was just magical. I can't imagine what Lenny would be playing today if he had stayed clean of drugs and hadn't met with such an unfortunate death.

Doug,

These are the scales from Cattle Call as I hear them. They are mostly quarter notes but played as 8th notes, so sustain as much as you can. As my musical theory is pretty non existent, I've probably got that all wrong and they are triplets. follow the pattern String/Fret:
6/3 5/0 6/7 5/3 4/0 5/7 4/3 3/0 4/7 2/0 3/5 2/3 1/0 2/6 1/3 1/5 slide 1/6 1/7

6/3 5/0 6/7 5/3 4/0 5/7 4/3 3/0 6/7 5/3 4/0 5/7 4/3 3/0 4/7 2/0 3/5 2/3 1/0 hammer 1/1 pulloff 1/0

1/7 2/8 3/10 1/0 3/7 4/10 2/0 4/7 3/0 5/8 pulloff 5/7 4/0 6/8 pulloff 6/7 5/0 6/3 5/0 6/7 5/3 4/0 5/7 4/3 3/0 6/7 5/3 4/0 5/7 4/3 3/0 4/7 2/0 3/5 1/0

If anyone has better ways of playing them, I'd be interested to find out. These scales have intrigued me for 40 years and I've only ever heard Chet play them with that precision.

Have fun and good luck
Regards
Mike

I'm a slow learner, it seems. I catch on to these "Chet tricks" slower than average, it would seem. Eventually I DO catch on, but it takes me longer, but the light eventually goes on.

From playing through the "Cattle Call" notes, I believe that is what is referred to as a "mixolodian" scale? In other words, it employs those open strings to facilitae smoother playing of the notes. and to give that legato sound.

I'm open to correction if I'm wrong. And Chet seemed to be the master of these scales.

As I said earlier, it was used in "My little Waltz", and now (Bing!) the light goes on! These open note interpolations MUST be how Chet played those great passages in "Old Joe Clark" and "Sugarfoot Rag" !

I could never imagine how it was done, before. but now the idea of inserting open strings at strategic spots explains everything so neatly.

Now give me another twenty years, and I'll be able to play them!

I'm happily working on those scales! Quite a stretch from the third fret to the seventh and trying to keep it legato at the same time. Sure would help to have about a half inch more length in my fingers!

However, I figure if I keep working on it and get it smooth. I will have taught my fingers to do what they "can't" do, and will be a better guitarist for having mastered these scales. I figure the improvement in finger stretch and dexterity will carry over into the songs I learn in the future.

I thank -you AGAIN, for your kindness in posting these! You've presented me with a fine challenge, and I love it!

Perhaps an easier fingering for the G Mixolydian scale--if I'm not mistaken, Chet showed this in one of his columns for Frets or Guitar Player magazine:

6/3, 6/5, 5/2, 5/3, 5/5, 4/2, 4/3, 4/5, 3/2, 3/4, 3/5, 2/3, 2/5, 2/6, 1/3, 1/5

Start the run with the index finger picking the first note, then follow with thumb picking 5/5 and follow with index and middle, etc.
