Hi, Ronnie... I played one of those Taylors with the new expression system in a music store this past Tuesday and to my ear it sounded very good. Very natural, just like the guitar, only louder. I own a 2008 Taylor 414ce that I really like but, it has the neck pick-up and two top-sensors. I like the sound of the bass strings but, especially when you go up the neck, the top three strings sound kind of "nasally" for lack of a better term. It's O.K., but, the new ES2 is a big improvement IMO. Thanks, Tom W.

Tom,
I was interested in the new 812C with ES2, which model did you try? Which music store?

Ronnie, I played the 814ce. It was at a store called "n'Stuff" (formerly "Pianos n'Stuff") just north of Pittsburgh, PA -Tom W.

Tom,
I was looking for a 12 fret 812C and I don't think the 814 is available as a 12 fret. Regardless, the pickup sound would not be that different. I had problems with the original Expression system on the guitars I tried at a music store similar to what you described. Apparently Taylor is moving away from the magnetic pickup idea mounted under the fret board, which is non-adjustable. I found the LR Baggs M80 to be a better choice over the Expression system due to the fact each string pick up could be adjusted for more or less magnetic/acoustic ratio and balance. My problem with the sound hole pick up, especially the M80, was striking it with my thumb pick.

As I understand it, the new Taylor ES2 is available on all models inclusive of the 500 series and up so, you should be able to get exactly what you want. If I ever get another Taylor, I'm looking at a 524ce with the cedar-top option and the ES2. My wife is very tolerant of my "Guitaritis" disease and I want to keep my marriage intact so, I need to spread-out my musical equipment purchases, LOL! As I said before, I really like my Taylor 414ce and it is a keeper but, I wish I could have it converted to the new ES2 which is not an option at this point. Oh, well, I also have a mint-condtion 6122-59 Nashville Classic that I just love, so I'm counting my blessings. That being said, I don't think there is any such thing as having "too many guitars"! -Tom W.
