Merry Christmas: A Buster B tune and another

Postby keener » Mon Dec 16, 2013 7:19 pm

About a month before he passed away, Buster B. Jones sent me a copy of what I believe is the last tune he ever recorded: Narly. It was one of his own compositions and he was proud of the fact that he recorded it with just one take, and said "I just sat down and picked and this is what came out."

Since then it has become sort of a Christmas tune for me, and I figured I'd share it with you folks for Christmas:

And, while the following is not Christmas music, I'm sharing it anyway. It's my Mom and Dad singing from 40+ years ago with me picking the Jerry Reed stuff in the background, and Dad taking the lead on breaks. It's a gospel song so it might have some Christmas flavoring to it.

I hope you enjoy both pieces and it is my wish that you all have a blessed and Merry Christmas and New Year.

Bruce Keener
P.S. I'm still not picking, but who knows ... maybe someday.

Hi Bruce,

That "Narly" certainly sounds like Buster B.'s style! I also enjoyed the one of your father. It has that "earthy" authentic sound. I'm sure you were proud of him.

It's hard to believe that 2 years have now passed since I spend that time at your house!

I wish for you a very Merry Christmas!

Bruce, you should send your folks recording of Ain't No Grave to the producers of "Justified". It would fit in perfect with the theme of the show. Tremendous picking. Great rendition! Thanks for sharing it. Merry Christmas to you too.

It was good to hear Buster pick again. It always seemed to me that he had excellent control of the fretboard. He could pick with the best of them. You were fortunate to get to make music with your Mom and Dad like that. It was good music too. Those are good memories for you, I'm sure. Thank you for sharing both of those pieces with us.
