Tommy captures the details of Chet's notes but since Chet wasn't using a steel string acoustic for most of his recordings, the "sound of Chet" isn't there.

But the spirit and inspiration of Chet sure is there. Tommy is #2 or #3 behind Chet in my book as far as technique, creativity and inspiration. He's done tons for fingerstyle... but no, he doesn't 'sound' like Chet for sure.

That's actually a good thing because Chet was much more impressed with people who didn't try to exactly sound like him. He was always learning and that wasn't as possible from people who were his "copies".

I always thought Tommy plays much cleaner than Chet. I don't think he is just a copy of Chet. He is an incredible flatpicker, too. I haven't seen a player who can match up to Tommy's techniques, though I think Buster B. had the most incredible fingerpicking technique.
Someone who comes close to Tommy in Steelstring-Fingerpicking is Doyle Dykes.
