...a little more dobro

Postby Norm » Tue Jun 26, 2012 12:10 pm

I had a real time with this one since Dobros really don't have much sustain...certainly not like a steel.

In any case, I'm kinda proud of this because my first stab at recording this was pretty lame. I'm learning to control Audacity a little more...hence the 'voodoo'... found some tricks...

That is a great job! I am impressed that the phrasing appears to be right in time which is difficult since you have no singer to follow. I could picture Patsy Cline singing the song because the timing of your performance reminded me of what I remember her doing on her recording of that song. I am envious of your "audacity" (pun intended) to post something.

When I would play impromptu onstage I would turn to the bass player and say... "You just stay on track. If I get lost, let me find You, don't you try to find me." and I would pray for a good bass player.

Band In A Box bass player kept me honest timewise. Patsy was in my head...

Thanks for the kind words...

I really have enjoyed these dobro posts. You have a nice touch and the song was played with feeling. I'd enjoy hearing more of this sound.

I really appreciate your kind words...

In my twenties and thrities I played a lot of guitar. Had a nice local reptutation as a finger style guitarist who had the good sense to go his own way since Chet had already done the Chet Atkins thing so well (if you know what I mean) My cherished, much modified Gretsch got stolen and it just broke something in me. A friend encouraged me to take up the Dobro which I played some and that worked well for me. I like to play fingerstyle stuff on it.

Bla, bla bla... I still play regular guitar. I got a 1961 single cut Gentleman but I just went more for Dobro. bla bla etc. So now I'm getting the hang of the audacity recording program and am making up for lost time. But I'm definitely a better Dobro player than a guitar player...

Thanks again, guys. I was a littel reluctant to put out Dobro on a guitar site. I just wish Paul could have heard me do some of it.

You´ll find a fine example of Norm´s dobro finger picking style on "Travis", scroll down to the right and enjoy.
