Jerry Reed - Georgia On My Mind

Postby Richard Hudson » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:34 pm

A while back, I attempted to record this song. It has always been one of my favorites. Phil has probably posted this before. With the understanding that everyone has different tastes, to me, Jerry Reed does this song the way it should be done. I don't see how it could be any better.

Richard, that song is a specialty of mine and I've done it for a lot of functions with the exception of singing. I do it more as an instrumental but still try to include some of Jerry's licks. To me the ending makes the song and I've tried not to change that.

I'd like to hear your version. Did you mean to include an attachment?

Rande, thank you for the response. When I first heard him do that one and Hallelujah, I Just Love Her So many years ago, that opened up a whole new world of appreciation for Jerry Reed for me. As if I didn't already think he was about the coolest thing to come along in a long time. With Jerry's Georgia background, I think he was able to put a little extra into this one.

Yes, I have recorded the song and I appreciate your courtesy in asking about it. Nothing compares with the Jerry Reed version, IMO. I will admit that Jerry was the inspiration for my version, although quite different (and not nearly as good). I play the song through on guitar before singing. As a self critic my opinion is that my vocal part is better than the guitar part, but that is probably because Jerry's outstanding playing is so ingrained in my memory. Maybe I should say the vocal is not quite as bad as the guitar part. "Slightly above below average?" as Chet might hopefully say.

I am still grateful to Chet, Jerry Reed, Merle Travis and others for the inspiration they have given.

Ray Charles made it famous, but Jerry owns that song.

Doug, I was talking about Richard Hudson's version. Yes, I've seen Jerry's (scaled down) version with Chet but my favorite is his original recording from about 1968. That's the one I worked with and learned his ending from. I don't consider that he really ever got it back since then. I watched Jerry and Chet together live in Hollywood, CA. the same year the "Bottom Line" video was done and I was told by a few in attendance that Chet was trying to encourage Jerry to get back into things after a time away from it all. Jerry was just getting his skills back. I could see the difference that evening from his earlier concerts in years past. However, although he managed to capture the basic essence of "Georgia" that night it still didn't have what the original recording did. I realize that studio work is more perfected.
