Lol! I wish!!!! What a great player!!!I was given a cassette of his pickin' many years ago by Charlie Justus, George Jones fiddle player. I had never heard of him before then. Charlie also worked with Faron Young but I can't remember if he ever got to work Odell.

One of the best kept musical secrets from west Kentucky.... Awesome picker..

You know, Audie, it was like 15 years ago when I made my first (of MANY) trips out to Travis Land with my young buddy, Chris Vickers, for Merle's birthday (I believe) celebration at the old high school in Drakesboro. We didn't know squat about the area, it's old or current guitar "stars." We just knew of Merle and that it was probably the birth place of our thumb pickin'.

Bobby Anderson (book writer and co-organizer of those guitar events out there) had a table set up in the lobby selling his books, other merchandise, AND this $5 CD by this picker we never heard of with about 30 tunes on it. We bought a couple and immediately just threw them in the car. On our way back to Dayton/Columbus from Drakesboro that Sunday we drove a little out of our way to drive through Indianapolis to catch Joe Jackson's monthly Pickin' Party in his garage. (Which is another story in itself.) But, anyway around 8 pm we were getting a little tired, so we got on US70 to come home.

Yawning at each other we both remembered at the same time those CDs we bought and threw one in my CD player. As the first tune was just starting to play he looked at me with his mouth open, I took my eyes off the road for a moment to look at Chris in utter amazement, "Who the hell is this!!!!" That was when we found out about the late amazing Odell Martin.

We never yawned, again, the whole 2 hours back to Dayton to drop Chris off. We played that CD over and over again -- all the way back. And, I listened to it for another hour after I delivered Chris. It was unbelievable that we had never heard of Odell, before. David's Dance was my favorite...

That was pretty much the same way it was for me too! I was visiting Charlie in Fredricksburg, Va and popped the cassette in the car sometime on the way back home. It not only knocked my hat in the creek, it knocked me in there too! Lol! It would have been something to meet him and hear him play in person! Another one we lost too soon! His arrangement of Sugarfoot Rag is really something too! Just wow!
