Rich, I remember Buster Jones and Tommy Jones both having narrow fingers, not to mention quite flexible, and their movements seemed quite controlled. Then I would watch Doyle Dykes and his were thicker but he still did what he had to.
I guess that lots and lots of practice is the most important factor.
