I have always loved the sound of the Browns (Jim, Maxine and Bonnie). One Tune I used to play ad infinitum was this one. Listen carefully to the Guitarist. Anyone know who it was and whether they put out a recording of their own?
Marty Robbins had a similar flamenco-like intro to "El Paso". Maybe the same guitarist?

Re: Who was this guitarist ?
Odds are good it could have been Grady Martin. Those studio used "A-Team" musicians and the A-Team was pretty busy.
Can't swear it was him tho.

Re: Who was this guitarist ?
Yeah, that is very reminiscent of the guitar on El Paso, and I've always heard that it was Grady Martin's work. I'd have to lean the same direction as Norm on this one.

Re: Who was this guitarist ?
If it is from this session, the session is listed as...
3 December 1959 [14:15-17:15]
RCA Victor Studio, 1610 Hawkins St., Nashville 3, TN
Browns (Jim Ed Brown, Maxine Brown, Bonnie Brown)
086 K2-WB-1570 Am I That Easy To Forget? LSP 2174
087 K2-WB-1571 The Wiffenpoof Song unissued
088 K2-WB-1572 Streamlined Cannonball LSP 2174
089 K2-WB-1573 My Adobe Hacienda LSP 2174
Hank Garland (Guitar)
John D. Loudermilk (Guitar)
Bob Moore (Bass)
Buddy Harman (Drums)
Floyd Cramer (Piano)
Anita Kerr Singers
Chet Atkins (Producer)
...however, these are often full of errors. I am more inclined to trust the ears of you guys.

Re: Who was this guitarist ?
Probably was Garland as the list shows since he was very active. He didn't get hurt until 1961. My naming Grady was deductive because I know he did a LOT of sessions in that era. Chet liked Hank and Hank would have been right up there with Grady as first call.
After Hank got hurt some session men would play a session but put in Hank's name instead of their own so Hank could make some money.

Re: Who was this guitarist ?
The style was similar but the technique seemed to me to be different. Probably Hank.
Here is another story that made it back to Oklahoma. I have found that about 90% of these "I heard" stories back home are untrue, but anyway, "I heard" that the guitar that Grady Martin used on El Paso was a cheap guitar, but it played easily and the sound was there. Paul has set me straight on a bunch of the yarns I have spun, so I have to qualify what I tell nowadays. BTW, I miss Paul's presence on the CB.

Re: Who was this guitarist ?
Regarding the El Paso song... I was poking around the net one day and someone was saying that Grady Martin played a Del Vecchio with nylon strings. Don't know if it was true or not but here is the thread for anyone that is interested. I have read that these guitars came with either steel strings or nylon. The one I received came with nylon. So who knows???

Re: Who was this guitarist ?
To further muddy the issue I heard that Grady Martin used a Martin D 28 on El Paso. It would be interesting to know the real story.

Re: Who was this guitarist ?
Two of the more perposterous "I heard" stories people have looked me in the eye and told me:
1. Chet did not play well unless he had a long time to prepare. Spontaneous off-the-cuff ad libbing was beyond him.
2. Chet recorded with Fender guitars. He only used Gretsch in public to make money on endorsements
