I agree about the classical position making it easier for the LEFT HAND to reach the notes but it totally messes up my right hand. I don't believe that the position that's forced upon the right hand in this case very easily allows for the thumb to do "it's thing", with all of the muting, etc. It's great for those who want to have their right hand knuckles parallel to the strings and for the end of the thumb to pick, as opposed to using the side of it, which playing with a thumbpick requires. My energy is being directed toward minimizing my finger movements.
Having said all of this, Red managed quite well and I would probably have to totally rework everything to accomplish what I'm already doing "incorrectly".
