Peace In The Valley

Postby Richard Hudson » Sun Jan 30, 2011 10:17 am

I shared this with my facebook friends, and though it may be considered somewhat off topic here, I wanted to share it with you because this song has a lot to do with my musical roots. This is perhaps the first song that I heard on the radio that impacted me significantly. Red Foley, to me, is the benchmark for this great old song. I was young enough that I didn't know who the guitar player was on the record, but I knew it sounded so very good. The tone and licks were unusual compared to what I was used to hearing. It was much later that I learned that Chet Atkins was that guitar player. So, you might say I discovered Red Foley before I knew who Chet was.

Thank you all for listening. My warmest regards to you all.

Thanks,
Richard

Very nicely done, Richard...and a very peaceful and serene way to start a Sunday morning...

Beautiful...and also part of my roots in north western NC & throughout VA and what seemed like a hundred small country churches where my parents pastored. There wasn't a lot of stringed instrumental music of the guitar vintage in those Methodist churches but surely this song was used in vocals accompanied by piano often.

Beautiful, Richard. I recall so well hearing Red Foley sing that, and watching it on TV. Seems like some other artists of those days also performed it (?), but I can't recall who.

Well done!

Wayne Henderson has a terrific version of "Peace in the Valley on his album "W. C. Henderson & Company".
Guitar, Mandolin, etc, all combine to make this a truely wonderful instrumental version.

Thanks very much fellas. Bruce, you're right, it has been sung by many. Maybe the most notable besides Red Foley was Elvis Presley. Red's version certainly influenced Elvis when he did it.
