Higher Ground

Postby rhudson » Sun Mar 03, 2013 9:44 am

This is an arrangement by my dear friend, Richard Kiser, of an old hymn, Higher Ground. I have always enjoyed Rich's arrangement, so I decided to try to record it yesterday. Pa Cobble used to play this arrangement a lot also. It always reminds me of him.

I hope you enjoy it.

I do not know this hymn but it has a beautiful melody and was very nicely done. You have a great touch sir.

Thank you for being kind enough to listen to my efforts. A few months back I was in Arlington, TX for the big guitar show down there and while visiting with Joe Carducci at the Gretsch booth I played a 6120DSW, which is basically the new version of the first Gretsch I ever saw Chet play. It is the 6120, shorter scale, dynasonic pickups, G brand and all that stuff. I was very impressed at how easy the guitar played and how great it sounded, not only on the Chet style material but also on tunes that I associated with Merle Travis. Well, to get back on point, I have a 6120DE, which has a lot of the same characteristics, more especially the dynasonic pickups. So, that's what this one is. My Duane Eddy guitar through the Parkel 25L15. It's a little bit different, but that's what life is all about. A little bit of variety. And, yes, Mitch, it is a little brighter. The second and third time around on the chorus, I used the little lick that Paul Yandell showed me on Back Home In Indiana, on the A chord. It fit pretty good, I thought, so I used that as a little nod to my buddy.

Rich Kiser did a great arrangement here. I really enjoyed getting to play it. Thank you all very much.
