Five Foot Two, Chet Atkins

I was recently "cleaning up" the hard drive on my computer and came across this old recording of Chet playing "Five Foot Two" in an unknown venue...and thought it might interest some of the folks on the ChetBoard!

I do not recall recording this myself, and I have no recollection of this particular "show" which Chet mentions at the very start of his performance! Before he plays the number, Chet says: "Thanks a lot JIM...so I could guess, and say he might be speaking to his brother (Jim Atkins), who was the program director of KOA Radio in Denver, Colorado when I lived there. As I found out later, Chet and Leona lived just a couple of blocks from me, and I didn't even know it at the time!

The sound quality is pretty bad on this, and I can tell it was recorded when Chet was still developing the "style" that would later make him world famous, but there's no mistaking that SOUND!

I’ve never uploaded just a sound file to the Board, so hopefully I’m doing it correctly!

I don't hear anything in that I would say is in the development stage. I think I know what you mean David but he really nailed all of that. Those single line licks in that are awesome.

Yeah, I wish I was "developing" that well. Just teasing David. Thanks for posting that. Very refreshing on this hot Oklahoma day.

Now THAT will make a fellar wanna go out and buy a pocket full'a thumbpicks!! I think Chet was "fully developed" when he recorded this tune! Kind'a reminds me of "Tweedle Dee" and other tunes he recorded about that time, same tone, licks, and a real toe-tapper. This is the kind of tune that inspired a lot of us to "give'r a try" and learn fingerstyle guitar pickin'. I'm gonna try to learn this one my ownself! Thanks a lot for posting this tune. Can't get enough of 'em! Steve

Hey Larry,

Well, at least I know now that he did indeed, record that. I thought there was the possibility I had a "one-of-a-kind" there, because I've got all (or almost all) of his albums, and I don't think it's on any of his LP's!

This was obviously a live performance, so my "guess" that it was in Denver might be accurate!

Yeah, my saying that he was "developing" might have been the wrong choice of words, but I think all you guys know what I meant! I guess it would be more accurate to say his "style" was not quite as "refined" and/or "sophisticated" as it would become later on. First of all, any "live" performance is not going to be as good as in a studio, controlled environment, etc. and I'm also not sure what guitar he was playing there, it could even have been PRE-D'Angelico for all I know, but as Roger says, he really "nailed" those fast, single string runs, etc.

There's only one, don'tcha know? :)

That might be from one of those old ROTC recruitment shows/albums. Hey! I think I heard Palmer's voice in there at the end . . . . LMark
