That's quite a relic, that Trigger. Up close, the hole in the top is about 2 x 3 inches, big enought to put your fingers into.
Just think, some day, that guitar will sell for 6 figures. :)

the article implies there is a series of photos (or something) showning how the hole evolved but I'm not seeing it

That particular Martin N-20 is a 1969 model with a 25.4 " neck. In 1970 the neck became a little longer, 26 3/8 ", and the headstock changed from a traditional flat Martin style to a shape with a pointed top. I saw Willie at a concert in 1970, and he played that very guitar before it got vandal ..., sorry, "willienized".

I've played Trigger before. Well, a few strums... it's like a dobro! Talk about high-action.
