Xciter question

Postby Fred » Tue Jan 04, 2011 7:49 pm

I know this has probably been discussed once upon a time, but can some recommend which Aphex Xciter works best with a Gibson CEC..the acoustic or the electric? Also, for a Gretch is the electric or the Bass preferred. Thanks,
Fred

Well, I'm sure you're going to get some opposing points of view, but I happen to prefer the Aphex 'Bass' Xciter, for any kind of a guitar...

Maybe it's just my ears!

I searched the archives of the old Chet Board and found a link to a discussion about the Xciter. There are a couple of videos on Youtube with Thom Bresh demonstrating the acoustic Xciter. I'm pasting in the link to the old Chet Board discussion, plus two Youtube links to the Bresh demos. I personally would like to have one of each? :) I hope these links help you decide about the Acoustic version. I also posted a link to a demo of the bass exciter and David has personal knowledge about the Bass version, so that is a great source, too.

I have the Acoustic and the Bass versions, and I've used them both with various guitars- acoustic, electric, and nylon string. When I use them, I usually just want a little bass boost, so I leave the treble control alone. When I do use the treble, it's just a little bit.

I also have the Punch Factory compressor, which I use with my Telecaster. It's more like the sound of a rackmount compressor in a stompbox, very clean and doesn't "pump."

They are all very high quality boxes.

I thought I'd check with Aphex, and got a quick reply, so I thought I'd share it for all.
Hello Fred,

I recommend and use an Acoustic Xciter Model 1401 (The green one) with my Kirk Sand and Godin guitars. For my Gretsch and Gibson guitars I use the Model 1402 Bass Xciter (The blue one). If I had to choose one for both duties it would be the 1402 Bass Xciter.

Thanks for your interest and question.
