"Echo rooms", elevator shafts and the like wouldn't really produce a repeating echo, just more in the way of a reverberation. I believe Chet remarked somewhere (his biography, Country Gentleman?) that when young he used to take his guitar to school and play in the bathroom where it produced a reverb. I also seem to remember that he mentioned that they would use the bathroom for reverb in the "old days" when he was producing Elvis' first RCA recordings, but my memory might be in error.

Here's an excerpt from Paul Yandell Second To The Best
page 138

"...For echo (“Slap-back” is an old term that describes a tape echo effect,
now it’s called delay) Chet used different setups over the years. In the
1950s, Chet used a tape machine for adding echo on his recordings. On
Chet’s old tunes like “Chinatown” there was one repeat. They got the
echo from another tape machine. It may have been one repeat was all
they had.
By “tape machine” I mean a tape recorder, probably a three track. Back
then he would change the speed on the capstan to vary the delay. Chet
used an old Magnecord tape deck (You can see it on the cover of his Chet
Atkins At Home album) for his echo effects..."
