Oops, a typo. The serial number is #1838 and Chet's is #1839. Sorry!

Thanks,

The other way to look at it, is, how much will that $30K car be worth in 10 years time? As compared to the guitar? And will it still be giving you that buzz?
PS I don't have that kind of money to spare at the moment, but I'd go for it if I did. 8-)

Just my own personal opinion and everyone has one........I don't think the guitar is worth anywhere near 30K now nor will it be in 10 years either.

I guess Russ will find out if it is 'worth' that kind of money or not. There are some people who look at that amount of money as chump change if it's for something they want.

Do you notice some subtle differences in the two guitars? The most obvious is the pickup and controls, and vibrola-tailpiece, then the 'F holes' are different, the fret board and markers are longer on Chet's, the pick guards (Russ mentions his is non-original), and the truss rod adj. cover is different, the sunburst, and what did I miss?

Even with these differences Russ has a fine historic guitar and I'm sure it sounds great, after all it is a D'Angelico handcrafted by John D'Angelico. I wish Russ the very best possible price he can get for it. Russ has done a marvelous job in creating Chet's guitar photo book " Me and My Guitars" and he is to be admired for that and his dedication to helping preserve Chet's legacy.

Thanks,

As I recall Chet asked for non-standard size f-holes on it. And Russ has a 'floating' pickup on his. There's only two people I know who dared cut a hole in the top of a D'angelico. One was Chet, the other was Paul. Not a job for the faint of heart.

John D. offered a range of trim, I'm sure...

Taking into account the prices 50s L5s are fetching, ($20-25,000,) and the prices paid for guitars owned by E Clapton, G Garcia, etc., as Norm says, $30K is small change to some people, and a John D'Angelico guitar is not nearly as available as even a vintage Gibson or Fender.
I'd still love to have it, just knowing Chet had played it, and commented favourably on it.
