Re: Is a Gretsch 5120 a good guitar?...
I would like to put the better pickups on my Gretsch 5120. I saw a nice video where TVJones pickups are put into a 5120. Video is here:
TV Jones Replaces Stock Gretsch 5120 Pickups with TV Classics

Part Two: https://youtu.be/qFaKL1IVlAs
What about those Filtertrons...which ones would make my sound like Chet's earlier electric stuff (copying the Country Gentlemen I guess), Filtertrons, TV Jones, etc?

Re: Is a Gretsch 5120 a good guitar?...
Art,
I have that same model guitar, color and everything, I think mine is a 2011 or 12 model. It is a wonderful guitar and plays very nice. I have replaced the pickups with a Tv Jones supertron in the neck and a Classic Plus in the bridge and it sounds very good ( in my opinion). To my ears it does sound like Chet's stuff from the 60's, like his '59 Gent but I think that is due in large part to the supertron, which is an exceptional neck pickup. Anyway glad you got a new toy and hope you have fun playing it.

Thank you Drail, that is some good information. I will be changing the stock pickups on my 5120 very soon and it looks like I'll have to spend around $300 for the same kind of pickups that you have. Then I'll have to pay someone to do it because I'm not sure if I can tackle the job like the above videos show. Thank you again Drail.
