This is a very interesting discussion! It expains alot. The third string is usually the one I (and apparently many of you) have the most tuning problems with on any guitar. I have always preferred a wound 3rd string on MOST guitars because it seems to tune up and note better than a plain third. The exception to this is my 1968 ES335. Although I don't play it much anymore, I always used a plain 3rd on it and got along pretty well. I never really understood why it semmed to not be a problem on it but apparently it is just the nature of the guitar. I currently have a Peavey Reactor (a tele copy) and I prefer a plain third on it, but I am having tuning trouble with it. I have tried changing the third string thinking I just had a bad one but with limited success. I am going to try shortening the scale length at the nut as described. Bet that will make a difference. I guess you are never too old to learn a new trick. Thanks for all the info in this discussion guys!
