Lenny Breau's Baldwin

Postby cettyboy » Sun Feb 17, 2013 6:24 pm

Lenny's Baldwin looked like a nice model.
Anybody ever try one?
I got an email from a guy last year that said he had the same model and wanted to sell it to me.Turned out to be a different guitar.
Just curious.
Thx

Mark -
Lenny played a Baldwin Virginian acoustic for awhile in his early days. And he played a Baldwin 12-string solidbody (fitted with 6 strings) for a time in the late 60's (?). Are these the models you're referring to? I'm not familiar with any Baldwin "Lenny Breau" model, though. Thanks, Bill.

I found three different Baldwin models that Lenny played.

This is Steve Grenier playing a Baldwin that Lenny personally owned.

Is this it?

I can't remember if this was a Baldwin or not but we had one of these at the store I worked at. It was OK. Had some interesting pickup combinations but didn't set the woods on fire.

Once he got into heroin guitars seemed to go from his hands to pawnshops with depressing regularity. I don't think he ever really liked any of them until some folks started to make guitars to order for him

This is the guitar Lenny is using on the cover of that album. Scrolling to the bottom you can see the face of it better.

I don't remember it as being a "Burns" guitar which makes me think we got ours after Baldwin bought the company.

“…Cincinnati’s Baldwin company bought Burns in 1965 and quality suffered — much like the same year’s CBS/Fender debacle, only on a smaller scale. But the Baldwin/Burns marriage produced some interesting oddballs…”

E-Bay has something similar in the acoustic line. Its a Burns-Baldwin GB65 (1965 vintage), apprears to be in excellent condition, nice wood, beautiful guitar. It ought to be nice . . . $6,500 "buy it now" price! WOW!!!

Mark,,,that's the one for you! :o

I dunno Gayle!
It was the pic the guy's had up on Lenny's first album and the same one on live at Shelly's Manhole album.
I talked to Chet Breau about that guitar and he told me it got ripped off when Lenny was on vacation.
Too bad.
Maybe someday it will resurface. If guitars could only talk!
