Really interesting, but how can anyone be sure, all those guys are gone. It is good to think its the real thing anyway. So I'll go along with it.

Well, with that particular guitar, the tip-off is the metal plugs in the fingerboard that were the Ray Butts experiment. It is identical to the Bacon/Day Gretsch Book photo on page 32 that also identifies it having been given to Bill Porter.

Re: Interesting... The "Dark Eyes" guitar
Thanks for the "heads up" on the "Dark Eyes" guitar thread @ the Gretsch Pages forum Norm! It's great that this guitar has surfaced. I'm also glad to hear that someone knows that the split pickup sealed orange/red top 6120 is owned by someone in NY. I wish that it would surface so that we could find a little more about it!
By the way Norm, how about an update on your Paul Yandell book?
Thanks again!

Re: Interesting... The "Dark Eyes" guitar
I think the country hall of music already has the "crown jewels" of Chet's guitars except for his Delvechio. When I visited Chet's exhibit, his Gretsch 6122 and his Gibson nylon string just had me in awe. I want Gretsch to make a run of the 6122's in a color like Chet's.

Re: Interesting... The "Dark Eyes" guitar
I agree. The 59 and D'Angelico are his most famous guitars. It would be nice if they also had the "red" maple topped guitar. The "Dark Eyes" guitar, while certainly interesting, was more of an experimental platform than anything else.

Re: Interesting... The "Dark Eyes" guitar
Here´s another take on enhancing the sound of the bass strings by installing a separate pickup over the strings. It´s the second and the third pictures from the top to the left.

It´s an Italian built Rayhorn, constructed and played by the Norwegian guitarist Robert Normann. It´s inspired by the Gretsches of the late 1950´s.

It's pretty much done. Trying to get in position to get a publisher now. I'd like Hal Leonard to pick it up. They did the Bigsby book and the MAMG book. I like the way they integrate text and photos. They're a pretty big company though and may not pick me up. Right now I'm looking for a Secret Ally. We'll see how that goes.
Mel Bay publications is not accepting any new submissions at this time.
