Thumb Picks

Postby JeffS » Mon Feb 27, 2012 6:25 pm

I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on different thumb pick materials. The Herco flatpick/thumbpick that I've seen Paul and Chet use is made from celluloid, and the Slick Picks (at least the ones that I have) I think are made from delrin. I have quite an assortment of Golden Gates, Dunlops, and some older Nationals (made in Japan in the 70's), but I don't know what they are made of. The reason I ask is there seems to be a difference in tone depending on the pick. Pick color within a common brand seems to vary. I think there is a noticeable difference in tone between a Dunlop Tortoise color and a Dunlop Calico color. I thought maybe the different colors are made from different materials.

Any thought on the subject would be appreciated, and also I would like to hear what your favorites are. For electric guitar I switch between the Herco flatpick/thumbpick, the Slick Pick, and the tortoise colored Dunlop. For banjo, I like the Golden Gate multi-colors.
