I've been watching Doc Watsons 1991 video again recently.
On his fingerpicking tunes he has some sort of thing on
his index finger. I'd like to get one if i could as the nail on
my index won't grow. Are they available for purchase & do
they have a name?

Hard to say since most of us don't have that video but what else can it be but some kind of fingerpick?

As to which one I'd suggest going to elderly.com and trying a few of what they have to offer.

Fimgerpicks take some getting used to so don't expect overnight success.

Takes practice.

I found two versions on YouTube and he seems to prefer a plastic fingerpick. An early vid looked like dark plastic and a more recent one looked to be a clear plastic one.

Buy some, try them.

Plastic ones can be shaped by immersion in hot water and shaping them while soft. Takes time to get them right.

I use fingerpicks on my Dobro and I use Dunlop .018. Easier and quicker to shape being they're made of nickel silver and are easy to find in any well stocked music store.
