Did the CAAS meeting happen this last week? Was it great? Were there tons of Chet-Pickers? Did they throw babies in the air? Did folks go crazy, dance in the aisles, do the boog-a-loo, bust up some tables and chairs? Were there any streakers? Were there any Sasquatch sightintgs? Anybody break a string? Anybody git bit by a bedbug? Did anybody play "Cannonball Rag"? Was there a ban on "Windy and Warm"? Anybody's hair catch on fire? How many people showed up? Any killer guitar players to report? Do I ask too many questions? Naaaaaaawwwwwwww! Just a passing thought.................................................

None of those exciting things but the hotel fire alarm went off at 4 am Friday morning and that was a lot of fun. Yes, there were more classic style Chet pickers this year and some really fine young ones coming up.

I thought it was super fantastic!! I went with my mom, a daughter and my sister(her first trip there). Always seeing folks again and meeting new ones. Lots of Chet, Merle, Jerry and Paul music, not much TE stuff that I love too. I did hear 'I Still Cant Say Goodbye' a few times and CBR and I'll See You in my Dreams and Avalon and Back Home In Indiana....Doyle Dykes was great on Wed and others too and the Paul Yandell tribute in the Belmont Room with many participating in that with stories and songs, Eddie Pennington and Micah was among those and played together, that was on Thursday, also Richard Hudson played with Meagan Taylor and they sang a tune that was really pretty, I forget the title. Friday, I heard a ton of great music but the Ky Jam with Paul Moseley and Joe Hudson was really great despite them being tired from the early morning fire alarm and played a nice, long time, tune after tune and then Palmer asked Paul to play JD's guitar and it was really quite special just they way Paul took it and very humbly spoke his admiration for that guitar and then so beautifully played a few tunes and In The Garden by request and it was one of those you-just-had-to-be-there moments and I was so happy to see and hear it. I regret not taking snapshots of it. It was also really neat to hear Jim Gale with Fred Kelly on stage 2...I understand why they call him Jammer now...lol. I also loved Meagan and Jason and Ben on Friday afternoon. They do great tunes. They did East TN Christmas! The whole set was great! We stayed til lunch on Sat. I heard more great stuff. Loved Brett Holland's show and then our time ended with Julian's show, which was too short because I could think of so many tunes I didnt hear....nevertheless, it was all good. There's so much more but those are some highlights for me. My dad (Jim Saunders) was a fixture at CAAS for years and I could just see him sitting there and I guess, well, we're understanding why, because we keep going back...lol.

Thanks to all who put this on every year!

Sorry, but I live a sheltered life (and others might also ask)

"...Palmer asked Paul to play JD's guitar "

Who is JD?

JD was J.D. Norman a long time member of the Ohio Fingerstyle Club who passed away recently from cancer. JD was a fixture at CAAS with Palmer and a great old pal of mine. JD owned this wonderful Super Chet Gretsch that sounds like a million bucks and JD could really play that guitar too. Palmer is the proud owner of the guitar now and I feel like that's where the guitar should be because of their great friendship. I really missed JD this CAAS, but I was fortunate to see him last year.

A very versatile performer named Mala Patterson played the spoons and danced some during Bob Saxton's show ( among other things.) After the show she gave Thom Bresh a quick block of instruction on buck dancing. That's about as close to dancing in the aisles as I saw. I don't know if she ever did the boog-a-loo during Uncle Bob's show or not.

I never saw Sasquatch but I did see someone who looked a lot like Elvis but he climbed into the UFO in the parking lot so quick and it took off so abruptly I couln't be sure. Again , he only "resembled" Elvis. ( You have choose your words real carefully when reporting an Elvis sighting. A lot of times people will assume you're nuts if you claim you saw Elvis!)

I don't think I've heard of Cannonball Rag. Is that a new tune??

Thanks so much for those kind words Pam and Roger. Yes, it was tough without JD this year, but he would have been very pleased with the way we kept so much of Chet's old tyme thumbpickin' alive in the Picker's Club Room. We had some special times in there, as Pam eluded to one: the Paul Yandell Tribute, Thom Bresh and Paul Moseley's two hour jam Friday night were the highlights. Another very special treat was the fact that it has taken me THIRTEEN years to get either Sean Weaver or Jim Nichols (who are two of the finest old time Chet pickers on the planet, and also VERY busy with Main Stage duties) – and, we got BOTH in there at the same time to pick “nuthin' but Chet” for an hour! It was so special that Doc Pritcher promised us that he would make an extra effort to schedule them to come in and play for us again next year, so that we can advertise it a little better and more people could enjoy it.

It's a joy to see all those world class players on the Main Stages, but to see them “up close n' personal” like you can when they finally come in our “little slice of heaven” it pure bliss – even for them.

Yes, the numbers were down a bit – probably due to Tommy not being there – but, IMHO it was one of the best ever.
