Gibson Chet Atkins Studio CE Nylon on eBay

Postby Ray Bohlken » Sun Mar 30, 2014 10:34 am

I was checking out eBay for Chet Atkins models and I ran across this one. These are pretty rare I think and this looks like a decent price for one.

That's not the "rare" Studio that everyone wants. That one is the Gibson Montana "studio" that was made for a few years in early 2000's. There's a Chetboarder named Spencer that plays a left-handed one that really sounds great!! He has some video on the tube.

Thanks for setting me straight...I thought it was one of the desirable ones. I had one of the original Gibson CE's that I bought used. It was a great guitar, but I never played one of the actual hollow ones like this Studio.

The original Gibson Studio Classic was based on Chet's request to use Kirk Sand's design. Then Gibson abandoned Kirk's design and went with the "Montana" version like the one on eBay. Roger is correct that Spencer makes his lefty model sound real good.

I have never understood who at Gibson talked them into changing the design of the studio classic.
The ones based on Kirk's design were great guitars and looked great too.

I never cared for these. Gibson must have not wanted to pay Kirk royalties for the design.
Gibson made a bad choice in taking Chet's name endorsement for granted.

I know the look changed, but are the electronics and the rest of the materials the same? That sound hole in the back was so wrong, but the guitar is essentially the same isn't it or am I totally off on this?

Go back and look at the bridge on the eBay guitar, and you'll see that the pickup is different as well. Don't know anything about it, but it's different.

I did check out the bridge again...I didn't notice the difference before. Thanks for the info, Bill. I also didn't know about the pickup, either.
Take care,

I think I remember a discussion back when Paul Yandell was still with us, and he was not very impressed with the newer Gibson Studio Classic (Montana). I will say again though, as Roger mentioned, that Spencer does make his lefty version sound pretty good. But the more desirable Studio Classics are the ones made before the "Montana".

The guitar was sold. If someone on this board bought it, please let us know how you like it.
