The details states it is VG ++, whatever that means for a Del Vecchio,
with a 23" scale. Is that the common scale for a Del Vecchio?

Ronnie,
This one is the same scale as Chet's short scale Del Vecchio. His had the "V" soundholes too. If I had the money I would seriously check into this one! Mine is a long scale. I would like to have one like this too. You don't find the short scale "V" soundhole Del Vecchio's very often!

From the Gruhn website:
EXC, spruce top, cypress back and sides, mahogany neck, fancy pearl and ebony top trim, interior label reads "Handcrafted especially for my friend, Chet Atkins. A great artist and humanitarian. Hascal Haile, Luthier. 10/14/72", Morgan Monroe HC... $10,000

It makes you wonder who had this guitar. I guess it could be possibly the Smithsonian guitar. I would like to great the full story on it.

Just got off the phone with Gruhn guitars as I was going to buy the DV! Regarding condition, the neck angle is off and needs a reset, and the frets are not accurate. Would make a great slide guitar, but that's not why most of us would want one :D . Took a pass on purchasing it as I don't want the headaches and expense of the reset and re-fret/new fingerboard to get it to play like Chet's (not to mention a truss rod installation which would probably be worthwhile). That being said, might be a good project for someone out there with the skill set to do the repairs themselves.

Any idea what a project like that would cost? By the way, what is Gruhn asking for the Del Vecchio?

Phil said they were asking 1500.00

As for repair cost I think it would depend on who did it. A reset for a Gretsch runs around 300.00 I think. Whether it would be the same for this I don't know.

The larger issue is making a new fingerboard that is scaled for that bridge placement. Once the old fingerboard is off a competent repair guy should be able to suggest a reenforecing rod if not a bona fide adjustable version.
