Chet's "Back Home In Indiana"

Postby rhirvine » Sat Jan 05, 2019 2:39 pm

The new pastor at my church is from Indiana. It popped into my head weeks ago that I used to know the first part of Chet's version up until the band comes in. I was surprised how much of the arrangement I remembered even though I haven't played it in decades. It was among the first arrangements of Chet's that I figured out. Is that the state song for Indiana? I loved the intro Chet did.

Indiana boy, here.

I think it is our state song.

If not, it needs to be.

Good ol'Jim Nabors did a sweet job on that tune every time he came to the Indy 500.

Sure gonna miss ol Jim.

You guys are having a great discussion of rolls and not to take away from that but I wanted to provide a link for a great version of "Back Home in Indiana". For a lesser player like myself I had to leave off after the intro and one chorus. This fellow developed it into a full 3 minute arrangement which I feel is both tasteful and smooth. It's what good fingerstyle playing is about, developing a full arrangement of a given tune. Something I've almost never been able to do. Anyway I hope you enjoy this version of "back home in Indiana".

Paul Moseley is a great, great picker in the the old Chet style. His version is reminiscent, of course, of the version on Chet's "Session" album. I've actually found it hard to "do anything" with this particular tune. It's hard (for me at least) to improvise on it to my satisfaction. But Chet, and now Paul, have done a mighty fine job with it. Paul is a great player. I love his version of "sweet bunch of daises" on you tube. I'm getting ready to learn it.
