Chet "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart" unusual effect!

Postby Doug Working » Sat Feb 17, 2018 7:32 pm

This has always been a favorite of mine, because of the unusual but really nice effect of getting the bass strings to play in the left speaker, while the treble strings are in the right. I don't know how Chet did it. I just know it's pure genius.

Also, is anyone aware of any other tune where Chet did that?? I'm not, but I'm willing to be corrected.

Simple.
He used the stereo 6120 he had or a guitar wired like it.

Hey Doug, Well there's lots of tunes like that. "I Know That You Know", "Swanee River", "You Do Something To Me", just to name a few. But there's a bunch out there! I know Chet used the "red top" CGP type 6120 on some of those tunes but he also had one or two others wired up the same way. I think one was a Country Gentleman. Chester was restless, sneaky, and inventive! Always messin' around. Check out that "Dark Eyes" guitar with the little magnet pickups on the bass side of the fingerboard on the high end. Chet and Ray Butts might have been mad scientists!! But we are all sure glad of it. There might be one or two more tunes there on the "Mister Guitar" stereo LP. Steve

Then I stand corrected. Maybe it's just that in tunes like "I Know That You Know" it's not as pronounced as it is in the posted tune.

Of course, I could be wrong. I've been know to do that a time or two.

So who was more technical between Chet and Paul? I've read and heard that Paul did a lot of the setup and modification for Chet.

Which would have allowed Chet to focus on practicing and playing.
