Here's the answer that Norm sent me. This information came from Paul Yandell a few years ago:
"Still, Chet would settle on one guitar like he did the ’59 Gretsch Country Gentleman he played for so many years. He recorded most of his records with that particular guitar. Later in life he wanted a phaser effect mounted in his guitar so he had me cut a hole in back of the tone and pickup volume knob, about 3” square. I put a plate over it. That was the only way to do it. He used the phaser on “Charade.” There’s a little micro switch between the two knobs on it. It was a phaser from an Electra guitar I had at the time. Back in the 70’s when I was with Jerry Reed I endorsed Electra guitars. They had modules that you could change out in the back of the guitar. One of those modules was a phaser. I took one of those and installed it in his ‘59"
