Free strokes / Rest strokes

Postby antzoul » Sun Jun 09, 2013 8:59 am

Hi,
First of all, I just discovered this board, it's great!
My question is : did Chet use rest strokes?
If so, when?
Thanks,
Antzoul

Most certainly he did,,,anytime he wanted a certain to be louder or more pronounced - - (just like in classical playing).

I've seen one YouTube of Chet in which at least 50% of the strokes are rest strokes. Can't remember which tune it was. I think he does a fair amount of rest stroking in Vincent. I've even seen him use rest stroke on his Country Gentleman (or a later model electric).

In addition to volume, the rest stroke can be used to change emphasis/expressiveness, and of course Chet was all about expressiveness.

On his typical "boom tchick" songs (cheek to cheek...) he seems to be using mostly free strokes.
On the dvd "The guitar of chet atkins" I did not see him using rest strokes...

Check out the link above. Chet uses rest strokes throughout "Waltz ForThe Lonely."
