Hell-o Everyone. I need some advice. I need a good microphone (not gold plated) for home recording with Garage Band in Windows 7. Does anyone have any experience with this and what would you recommend?

Jim,
What exactly are you trying to record? Vocals, electric guitar, acoustic? People have different preferences for each. An industry standard, all around, inexpensive mic would be the shure SM57.

Jim - It depends on how much money you want to spend, because microphone prices range from $40 to $4000 and up. I've recently set up a simple inexpensive home recording studio. After some online research, I purchased a basic Shure SM57 dynamic and a pair of Samson C02 condenser mics. The SM57 (and SM58 vocal mic) have been around for decades and are legendary recording mics. The Samson C02 is a newcomer and not as popular as the Shure brand, but gets very good reviews online -

Thanks for replying, Alex and Bill. I want to record vocals, acoustic, and electric. I have an SM57 and an audio-technica MB3k vocal mike, so maybe my question should be "what are you using for an interface?". I am new to Garage Band and computer recording, so I am pretty much lost. Thank you for your help.

I also have a behringer mixer board (small one). From there I have 2 RCA outputs that go into the interface, which then goes into the USB in my computer. After a little finagling - switching your audio inputs and outputs in garageband preferences, you should be able to hook up to it. I have learned that recording is REALLY difficult to get right! Haha - it will take me a lot more time to get the right settings and get great sound. Guess I haven't really played with it too much. Hope this helps!
